Family Medicine Q & A

What is the purpose of laboratory testing?

Lab tests help Dr. Brown in diagnosing and ruling out specific illnesses caused by various symptoms, from a headache to a sore throat. In addition, lab testing is used to monitor chronic conditions, the impact of treatments, evaluate organ function, and to obtain baseline measures for patients during routine examinations.

What are the benefits of onsite lab testing?

Marina Medical’s onsite lab enables patients to have many tests conducted without having to travel anywhere else and wait in line. The on-site lab also allows Dr. Brown to access test results immediately, during the patient’s visit. That expedites treatment and, therefore, recovery. On-site lab tests additionally provide a cost-savings to patients.

What tests can be performed at Marina Medical’s onsite lab?

Onsite staff are able to administer a wide-range of testing for a variety of health concerns, including:

  • Prothrombin time to monitor warfarin anticoagulation

  • Microscopy to assist diagnosis of vaginal and other infections

  • Urinalysis and urine microscopy

  • Cholesterol checks, a blood test to check high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol, low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol and triglycerides

  • Basic Metabolic Panel to measure glucose (sugar) level, electrolyte and fluid balance, and kidney function.

  • Complete Metabolic Panel (CMP) to measure kidney, liver and common metabolic problems

  • Hemoglobin A1c to check for blood sugar control and to test for diabetes

  • Hematocrit and hemoglobin to check for anemia

  • Stool microscopy (for pinworm and other parasite testing)

  • Fecal occult blood test to check for blood in the stool, which may indicate colon cancer

  • Urine Toxicology Testing to check for treatment compliance and illicit drugs

What about tests that cannot be conducted onsite?

For all other laboratory testing, blood can be drawn at Marina Medical and/or needed specimens can be collected; these are then processed through off-site testing at Quest Laboratory.

Are there other medical tests that can be conducted onsite?

  • Electrocardiogram to evaluate cardiac function

  • Impedance cardiography to evaluate heart function, check for congestive heart failure, analyze different causes of high blood pressure and guide most effective treatment for hypertension

  • Pulmonary function testing to check for asthma, COPD, and to monitor efficacy of treatment

  • Memory and Cognitive Function testing (computer assisted) to detect very early changes in brain function when treatment is most effective

  • Total Body Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA) for determination of body composition, fat percentage, level of fitness.
