Chronic Illness Management Q & A

What is a chronic illness?

A chronic illness is an ongoing disease or condition that, in most cases, can be managed but not cured. Now more prevalent than ever in the United States, chronic illness is the number one cause of death, accounting for 70% of all mortality,  The high incidence is partly because this country’s population is aging and life expectancy has increased.  It is also due to increased consumption of processed foods and sedentary lifestyles, dietary and environmental toxins, and high levels of unmanaged stress.  According to the CDC, about half of all adults in the United States suffer from some chronic illness, while one in four adults suffer from multiple chronic conditions; and that last figure is even higher – one in three – among adults older than age 65.  Patients living with chronic illnesses and conditions often need to follow daily regimens, such as taking medication to control symptoms and avoid further complications.

What are the most common chronic illnesses?

Some of the more common chronic illnesses are:

  • Allergies and Asthma

  • Arthritis

  • Alzheimer’s disease

  • Cancer

  • Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)

  • Chronic pain, such as back pain

  • Depression

  • Diabetes

How can Marina Medical help manage my chronic illness?

Dr. Brown and the medical team at Marina Medical are experienced in helping patients manage a wide range of chronic illness, from allergies to Alzheimer’s disease. They provide systematic monitoring and serve as a point of contact for any and all specialists a patient may require. Many patients appreciate having a 'point person' who can help coordinate care between the various specialists, and also explain exactly what is happening.

In addition, Dr. Brown helps patients in modifying behaviors and implementing lifestyle changes that improve symptoms. These include smoking cessation, exercise programs (yoga and T'ai Chi), nutrition education (nutrition workshops are available on site), weight management, medication management, stress reduction techniques (yoga and meditation instruction are available on site), and counseling regarding vitamins and supplements. Staff are happy to provide information about additional educational programs available for disease-specific chronic conditions.

Are there services that can help me prevent chronic illness?

Many services at Marina Medical are geared toward preventing chronic problems in the first place – or intervening early in their progression. First, health histories, written risk assessments, and oral interviews, as well as laboratory, cognitive and other medical testing and exams provide unique information about a person’s likelihood of developing chronic problems. Second, education and counseling regarding nutrition, fitness and stress reduction – including programs in Club Wellness  – provide guidance and encouragement for making sustainable lifestyle changes. Counseling about helpful nutritional supplements is available. Finally, there are situations for which prescription medications or various medical treatments can be beneficial.
